UNLIKELY LEAGUE for the SAFEKEEPING of PURPOSELESSNESS (& RELATED ABSURDITY)

In a world that demands purpose from everything, ULSP(RA) exists to protect what's left when purpose is removed.
For the right to exist without justification should not require one.

ABOUT

The Unlikely* League for the Safekeeping of Purposelessness (& Related Absurdity) (hereafter: ULSP(RA)) has latently existed since 1973. For most of that time it remained quiet and without consequence - a condition the organisation regards not as a shortcoming, but as foundational. The decision to make itself known was long deferred for reasons one might loosely describe as life, but was, in due course, reached.

ULSP(RA) concerns itself with the identification, documentation, preservation and contemplation of purposelessness in all its manifestations and of such absurdity as arises from it or serves it. Absurdity for its own sake is not our concern. We are not without standards.
It does so in full awareness of the paradox this entails: to dedicate oneself to the preservation of purposelessness is to impose upon it the very thing it resists. ULSP(RA) accepts this contradiction not as a flaw in its reasoning, but as the foundation of its existence and the principle of its method.

The League publishes, documents and announces. Not because this is necessary, but because silence is also a choice and therefore equally suspect.

Membership is open to all. Whether or not you feel addressed by our manifesto is, frankly, beside the point.

MANIFESTO

In an age consumed by relentless productivity, efficiency and the unyielding pursuit of measurable outcomes, the Unlikely* League for the Safekeeping of Purposelessness (& Related Absurdity) (hereafter: ULSP(RA)) stands as both a counterpoint and resistance. We affirm that the pervasive demand for purpose in all aspects of life has progressively narrowed human experience, reducing existence to a cycle of goals, utility and fixed or open meaning. As this search unfolds against the backdrop of life’s inherent meaninglessness, it should long since have abolished itself, yet apparently, external interests have prevented this.

We acknowledge the inherent contradiction of our mission. In dedicating ourselves to the preservation of purposelessness, we seemingly impose purpose upon that which intrinsically resists it. Yet, this deliberate paradox underscores the urgency of our cause, as a cultural, intellectual and existential necessity. To prevent purposelessness from being subsumed or erased, the ULSP(RA) embraces its inherent incongruity as a necessary exception to protect what might otherwise be lost.

Purposelessness, often dismissed as trivial or wasteful, embodies a profound freedom - the right to simply be. It claims no higher justification, no ulterior goal and no validation through utility. To exist without need or explanation is to reclaim a dimension of life that has been overshadowed by the compulsion for meaning. In this way, purposelessness is not a deficiency but a birthright: a state in which thought, action and being can transcend the confines of objectives. To safeguard this space is to protect the possibility of simply existing - without justification, without striving and without deference to predetermined ends, which might be a definition of life itself as existence unchained from the shackles of meaning.

We further clarify that our embrace of absurdity is limited to that which arises from or sustains purposelessness and challenges the confines of reason and utility. We do not endorse absurdity for its own sake, nor justify all that is nonsensical. Instead, we regard the absurd as a vital ally in confronting the tyranny of purpose. Absurdity, when tethered to purposelessness, liberates us from the oppressive weight of coherence and achievement.

The ULSP(RA) calls upon humanity to reclaim its right to purposelessness, to affirm the act of being without the demand for becoming. We invite all who resonate with this manifesto to join us in safeguarding the quiet, unassuming sanctuary of existence as it is: a celebration of life that requires nothing more than itself.
